Job Description Overview

As the Stateside Mentor Team Lead, your job is to oversee the team of mentors that will run the Pre-field and Post-field portions of our program, as well as the applicant process. You will supervise and train these mentors and managers in effective mentoring and coaching skills as related to mobilizing young adults to overseas missions. You will be responsible for evaluating, developing, and coaching these managers and mentors to help them become as effective as possible. You will also be responsible for the overall effectiveness of the Pre-field and Post-field portions of the program. You will work closely with the Director of Programming to ensure continuity and create world class mobilization offerings.

  • Strong mentoring, coaching, and leadership skills that can be used to help others become effective mentors, coaches, and leaders within the missions industry

  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills

  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail

  • Possesses high standards of excellence

  • Significant experience in one-on-one and team mentoring environments for young adults

  • Experience with cross-cultural ministry and “culture shock” preferred

  • Proven ability to maturely communicate Biblical truth in small groups and individual mentoring

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment

  • Patient and adaptable disposition to changing circumstances

  • English speaking

Specific Job Duties, Tasks, and Responsibilities

  • Train Managers and Student Mentors in effective mentoring skills

  • Lead a weekly Stateside Mentor Team meeting focused on communication and development

  • If applicable, lead a weekly Stateside Mentor Team leadership meeting focused on collaborating with managers

  • Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with manager and/or mentors with the goal of coaching, developing, and improving their performance

  • Develop and improve mentoring curriculum that addresses the fears and obstacles young adults will face when considering long-term missions work

  • Oversee the support raising efforts of the various teams

  • Make final decisions about students approval to go overseas based on the applicant process, pre-field engagement, and support raising

  • Work to develop a deep network with various missions agencies who offer opportunities that could be potential opportunities for our graduates

  • Regularly evaluate the mentors and managers, and determine where improvement is needed

  • Serve as a contact to family and friends while students are overseas

  • Perform regular evaluations of the effectiveness of Pre-field and Post-field and make improvements as necessary

  • Lead a yearly Mentor Team retreat focused on vision casting, rest, relationship, and development

  • Approve PTO, expense reports, annual budgets, raise requests, and other HR designated tasks for the Stateside Mentor Team in collaboration with managers

  • Work closely with the Director of Programming to continuously improve the overall process and program

  • Facilitate collaboration and communication between the stateside mentor team and all other teams within Cafe 1040

  • Manage, supervise, develop, and support Applicant Process Manager, Mentor Team Admin, and Alumni Care and Strategic Partnerships Manager

  • Support and uphold the policies, values, and statement of faith of Cafe 1040

  • Maintain sustainable funding levels for your role through Cafe 1040’s supportraising model committing 10% of your time on a weekly basis.

  • Actively take the opportunities to mobilize those people in the scope of your influence toward involvement and investment in the mission and vision of Cafe 1040

This is a support-based position. Nothing in this job description restricts Cafe 1040’s right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this job at any time.  Responsibilities occasionally may require an adjusted work schedule, and evening/weekend hours in order to meet deadlines.
